A Filtered Life

Filtered water is big business. According to Consumer Reports Americans spent 35 billion dollars on filtered water last year. That’s a lot of money just to ensure you’re putting clean water in your body.

It’s easy to see the connection between our health and clean water. On average, the human body is 60% water, so it’s essential that we drink clean water. As good as water is for our physical body, we should also take the same amount of caution in filtering what we allow in our minds and our spirits. Unfortunately, few of us stop to consider what we allow in our spirits. It’s a bit harder to manage because it’s not something we can physically see.

When we aren’t careful to filter what we allow in our lives, we become polluted on the inside. King David understood the connection between our thought life and our actions when he wrote:

“I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar.” Psalm 103:10 NLT

It’s essential to be careful of what you consume with your eyes. The eyes are the gateway to your soul. These verses have often been used to warn someone of the effects of pornography on their life. While this is undoubtedly true, this verse means so much more than that. With the proliferation of videos on social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Snap Chat, and Tik Tok, we need to be careful to guard our eyes more than ever.

What you consume with your eyes affects your thought life. Your thoughts become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your life. That’s why it’s important to filter what you allow in your spirit.

If you’re constantly having anxious thoughts and thoughts of fear, then it might be good to stop and think about your spiritual diet. If you’re blindly consuming anything that’s put before your eyes, there’s a good chance it’s affecting your spirit. Only fools think this does not affect them.

In the New Testament, Jesus taught on the importance of healthy spiritual eyesight when he said:

“Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!” (Matt. 6:22-23 NLT)

Your eyes will either create light or darkness in your life. If you’re dark on the inside, it’s because you’re allowing darkness through your eye gates. Change your outside view; then you’ll change your inside view. How can you better filter what’s allowed in your life?
